Local Writer Sets New Suspense Novel in McLean
Read of the first chapter of Marel Brady's "It's all about Jack!"
When McLean Patch found out local resident Marel Brady set her latest mystery novel in our small community, we had a few questions.
Above, you'll find the first chapter of the book, "It's All About Jack!"
Read on about her love of writing, why she chose to include McLean and Tysons Corner in the book and where you can buy a copy.
1. What did you choose to set this novel in the Tysons Corner area?
I came to live in McLean three years ago and wanted to capture the environment.
2. What familiar local landmarks will your readers recognize?
Readers will recognize many street names, stores, festivals, restaurants and places of interest in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. (The) structure of "It's all about Jack!" is alternating diaries of two women. My aim is to portray intimate relationships in colorful surroundings while addressing contemporary social issues.
3. How did you become a novelist? Have you always been passionate about writing?
I fell in love with books at eight years old and decided to become an author. On giving up my career as a human resources manager, I was able to devote my time to writing.
4. What advice would you give your neighbors who might also be trying to write a novel?
Advice to others...be aware of what's involved...extremely time consuming...each novel took three years...not simply writing, but editing and finding a publisher...not for the faint-hearted...but if you believe in your own work, you'll get there in the end...and enjoy lots of fun in the process.
5. Where can an interested reader buy a copy of your book?
(The book) can be obtained from any supplier of books and directly from http://www.tatepublishing.com/.
Editor's Note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly referred to Marel Brady as a man.
