"McLean" Proposed Name for New Subway Station on Dolley Madison

Fairfax proposes subway station names

McLean started as a trolley stop on the The Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad in 1910.

Now the Fairfax County Department of Transportation has suggested McLean as the name of the first of five subway stations on the Metrorail Silver Line  now under construction through McLean and Tysons Corner.

The first phase of the 23 miles of rail that will run eventually into Loudoun County will be completed in late 2013, with the  Reston station (Wiehle-Reston East) serving as the end of the line until Phase 2 opens three years later.

Now the question becomes can McLean residents get to the "McLean" station or the three stations in Tysons Corner by public transportation.

McLean residents know we can't take a bus to the nearby West Falls Church station.

The Reston Parkway station may be named Reston Town Center, even though the station will be several blocks from Reston Town Center proper.

Metro says it received more than 16,000 responses from the public after calling for input recently. Officials suggested that station names should be relevant, brief and evocative.

FDOT staff recommends the following names, according to The Washington Post.

*Tysons East on Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123)  near Old Meadow would be called McLean.

*Tysons Central 123 directly across Route 123 from Tysons Corner Mall would be called Tysons Corner.

*Tysons Central 7 on Route 7 just north of the intersection with Route 123 would be called Greensboro Park.

*Tysons West  on Route 7 at Spring Hill Road would be Spring Hill.

*Wiehle Avenue would be Wiehle-Reston East.

Phase 2 stations:

*Reston Parkway would be Reston Town Center.

*Herndon-Monroe would be Herndon.

*Route 28 would be Innovation, named after Innovation Road which is an existing road just north of the station.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is expected to pass a resolution Tuesday with name recommendations. The final vote on the station names then goes to the Metro board of directors, and the Metro board is likely to decide later this spring.

Great to have it called McLean, but too bad it is nowhere near downtown McLean. I predict we will come to regret that very much.
