Yorktown High School student's work will be displayed at U.S. Capitol for one year.
More than 60 pieces of art created by high school students across the 8th Congressional District will be on display at the Artisphere in Rosslyn through June 17. The exhibition is the result of the annual Congressional Art Competition, which began in 1982 to give members of Congress a chance to encourage and recognize young artistic talent. "Lady of Rain," a photograph by 18-year-old Ryan Carroll, a Yorktown High School senior, won the contest and will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol along with the winners from other congressional districts across the country. Annual spring fundraiser
About 400 people gathered on the grounds of McLean's most historic home Thursday evening to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the McLean Project for the Arts. "This is the traditional spring event for McLean. People are so excited to be here," said McLean architect and MPA board member Jack Wilbern as he stood in the midst of crowd gathered in and around the pool at Salona. "This year MPA outdid itself with a grand 50th anniversary celebration," said Jane Edmondson, chief of staff to Dranesville Supervisor John Foust. Up to $1,200 scholarships available for students in the arts
Friday is the deadline for McLean and Great Falls students in Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts to apply for scholarships worth up to $1,200 given by the McLean Community Center. Last year 19 students applied for the James Macdonald Scholarships: 4 Dance, 9 Music, 2 Theatre, and 4 Visual Arts. Six entries are needed in each category to be viable. Therefore, scholarships were only awarded in music. The competition is open to 9th-12th grade students who reside in or who attend high school in the Community Center's tax district. A $1,200 scholarship prize will be given to first-place winners in each of the following categories: Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts. Fans of the popular young adult novels came out in droves for the midnight screening of "The Hunger Games."
Team Peeta or Team Gale? A group of teenagers were asking fellow movie-goers which character they sided with on line at the AMC Hoffman Center in Alexandria Thursday night as fans of "The Hunger Games" lined up for the film's midnight screening. Based on the popular young adult trilogy by Suzanne Collins, "The Hunger Games" follows protagonist Katniss Everdeen as she fights to the death with 23 other teens from across Panem. Katniss is joined by Peeta Mellark, a baker's son who professes his love for her before the Games. Movie debuted at midnight Friday
By 9 p.m. Thursday, throngs of mostly young people were standing in line for the premiere of The Hunger Game, a much-anticipated movie premiering at midnight at the Tysons Corner movie theaters and across the U.S. The AMC theaters at Tysons Corner has 16 screens. 13 are showing the Hunger Games.
