Second year board has kept votes secret
Two incumbents, a newcomer and two students have won seats on the McLean Community Center board. For the second year in a row the Community Center Elections Committee has taken the highly unusual action of refusing to release the vote totals. The winners of the election which was held at McLean Day today were incumbents Susan Bourgeois and Craig Richardson, who ran as a write-in candidate and newcomer Laurelie Wallace. The contests were in the student races where Malika Nimmagadda defeated Craig McKenzie for the McLean High School seat on the board. Drew Armstrong defeated Will Ferrer for the Langley High seat. Robin Walker, head of the Elections Committee, announced only the names of the winners, but kept secret the number of votes they …

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.
U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Comparing campaign statements with the facts
As a public service, McLean Patch assesses claims made by candidates running for reelection as many newspapers do. Today we look at campaign statements made by Susan Bourgeois who is running for election to a second term on the McLean Community Center Board. Craig Richardson, a second incumbent, is also running for reelection --- but as a write-in candidate. He said he decided to run after the deadline for candidates. As a write-in candidate he filed no campaign statements as other candidates are required to do. Bourgeois Campaign statement: "I have consistently voted for a reduction in the district tax rate to minimize the surplus while keeping in mind that to be “the center of it all,” MCC should have a larger presence in the downtown …

Notice of your new congressional district
About half of McLean --- basically the neighbors living south of Dolley Madison Boulevard--- are receiving new voter registration cards because they have a new congressman. Remember the Democrats and Republicans drastically changed the boundaries of Virginia's 11 congressional districts. The Republican leaning districts became more Republican and the Democratic leaning districts more Democratic. Redistricting also ensures that the 11 districts are as equal in population totals as possible. All of McLean had previously been represented by Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10th)). Now the southern half of McLean is represented by Rep. Jim Moran (D-8th). Approximately 195,000 voters in Fairfax County now live in a new congressional district including many …

This article seems to me to be about 10% informational (vote results) and about 90% of trying to stir up trouble. So the vote numbers will be released tomorrow or Monday....What's the big deal? If there are such compelling reasons on why the vote totals should be released earlier, then at least state those reasons in this article!   more ›
