Learn About Confederate Guerrilla Fighter John Mosby: The Great Falls Historical Society kicks off its fall season at 7 p.m. Wednesday with a free event featuring Civil War enthusiast Rick Turner, who will speak in first-person about Confederate guerrilla fighter John Mosby's career. He'll talk about Mosby's role in leading the cavalry through Great Falls on its way to Gettysburg and appear in period clothing with his wife filling in for Mosby's better half. More information here.

Early Fall at Harth: Fall might start until Sunday, but Harth at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner is getting into the mood early — by adding daily wine specials to its lunch menu. Harth is located at 7920 Jones Branch Drive.

Run, Hide, Fight: Fairfax County distributed this video Tuesday to help residents prepare for an active shooter event. The video may make some viewers — Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Sharon Bulova called it "alarming" and saidshe hesitated to share it on Facebook — but county officials thought it was appropriate to release in light of this week's mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.

Classical Music: Serbian flutist Andjela Bratic and Serbian pianist Jasna Popovic perform at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage at 6 p.m. Wednesday. This event is free. The Kennedy Center is located at 2700 F St. NW in Washington. 202-467-4600.

Speak and Spell: Virginia’s own Sen. Tim Kaine and Rep. Gerry Connolly will take the stage along with other lawmakers and journalists in that most American of showdowns – the spelling bee. Howard Fineman from the Huffington Post and Major Garrett from CBS News are among the journalists.
