97th Regimental String Band Celebrates Music of the Civil War

Where/When:  Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor Center, 2709 West Ox Road, Herndon; Sunday, July 17, 7- 9 p.m.

Why Go: Gather in the Visitor Center at Frying Pan Farm Park to hear a concert of period music in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The 97th Regimental String Band will perform fun, high-spirited Civil War Era ballads and popular tunes of the 19th century. 

Pricing: $10 per person

Summer Colonial Market Fair

Where/When:  Claude Moore Colonial Farm, 6310 Georgetown Pike, McLean; Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17, 11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Why Go: Kids and guardians can celebrate summer and the days of yore with dancing, a Gypsy fortune teller, watercolor painting, a puppet show, and hands-on crafts. Market wares such as blacksmith nails, potions and lotions, and millinery goods will be available for sale. Period food (roast chicken, sausages and bread) and drinks (lemonade, wine and ale) will make a hearty lunch.

Pricing: $6 adults, $3 children and seniors.

Ages: All welcome

 

Theme Park Wednesday Trip

Where/When:  Trip to Kings Dominion leaves from the Old Firehouse, 1440 Chain Bridge Road, McLean; Wednesday, July 20, 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. 

Why Go: As part of the Old Firehouse’s Theme Park Wednesday program, teens this week go to Kings Dominion, where they can scream themselves hoarse on rides like the “Dominator,” “Anaconda” and “Berserker.”

Pricing: $70/$60 McLean district residents 

Ages: Fifth- to eighth-graders
