Grab & Go: Events for Parents and Kids in McLean

This Week: Disney Princesses; Artful Animals; Live Reptiles

Disney in Concert

Where/When: Wolf Trap, 1645 Trap Road, Vienna; Thursday, August 4, 8:30 p.m.

Why Go: The National Symphony Orchestra will perform a medley of Disney’s uplifting and catchy songs against a backdrop of movie clips. Even from the lawn, you’ll be able to enjoy tunes from The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King, and more.

Pricing: Tickets are $20 - $52. Students can save 50% on their ticket by purchasing at the box office with a valid student ID.

McLean Project for the Arts Summer Art Camp

Where/When:  McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Avenue, McLean; Monday, August 8 through Friday, August 12. Morning session is 9:30 a.m. to noon. Afternoon session is 1:00 to 3:30 p.m.

Why Go: This fun and creative art camp, tailored to suit your elementary schooler, is a great solution to the late summer doldrums. Kids ages 6 – 8 can attend the morning session, “Amazing Artful Animals,” where they will draw and paint real and imaginary animals. The afternoon session, “Abstracting from Nature,” will teach kids ages 8 – 11 how to translate color and shapes onto the page.

Pricing: Tuition is $165/$150 McLean district residents. All materials are provided.

Ages: The morning session is for ages 6–8 (rising 1st through 3rd graders). The afternoon session is for ages 8–11 (rising 3rd through 6th graders). Rising 3rd graders may choose morning or afternoon sessions.

Reptile Wonders

Where/When: Dolley Madison Library, 1244 Oak Ridge Avenue, McLean; Saturday, August 6, 2:30 – 3:15 p.m.

Why Go: Maryland’s Nature Center on the Go provides traveling educational programs, using interpretive, interactive, hands-on activities to awaken a sense of environmental awareness in kids. At this event at Dolley Madison, children will be able to meet and learn about slimy, squirmy, and fascinating reptiles.

Pricing: Free!

Ages: Ages 6-12.
