Hurricane Sandy, 'Frankenstorm' Preparation Advice from the Twitterverse

Agencies, utilities, other services taking to social media to give residents advice on preparing for the coming storm.

Dominion Virginia Power, Fairfax County and various organizations have been taking to Twitter to give residents tips about preparing for Hurricane Sandy, which could affect Northern Virginia Sunday through Tuesday.

It is extraordinarily unlikely that Hurricane Sandy will ever make landfall in this area, but the outer bands of the storm, combined with early winter weather to the west and cold air coming from the north, could create what forecasters are now calling a “Frankenstorm.”

“It is likely to hit during a full moon when tides are near their highest, increasing coastal flooding potential, NOAA forecasts warn. And with some trees still leafy and the potential for snow, power outages could last to Election Day, some meteorologists fear,” the Associated Press has reported.

Here are a few of the tweets from @DomVaPower, which is stocking up its power trucks with supplies and already preparing for the potential storm:

Great rule of thumb for #storm prep – keep grocery shopping to a minimum in case of outages. #Sandy #VA
