McLean Bugler Plays Downtown to Remember 9-11

Other local things to do this weekend in your neighborhood!

For the second year, McLean neighbor Ted Smith will play Taps at four McLean supermarkets Sunday to commemorate those who died on 9/11.

Smith, who lives in Chesterbrook and serves as budget chair of the McLean Citizens Association, is a member of Bugles Across a America. “We felt that every Veteran deserved a live rendition of taps played by a live Bugler,” at their funeral. “To this end, we are actively seeking volunteers to provide this valuable service to Veterans and their families,” says their website.

Smith and his bugle have been together since he was in the Boy Scouts. Here's the schedule, according to Smith:

8:46 A.M. I will begin in front of the Chesterbrook Safeway on Old Dominion Drive at precisely  the time that American Airlines Flight 11 flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

9:03 A.M. I will sound Taps in front of the International Safeway on Chain Bridge Road. This is the time that United Flight 175 hit the South Tower. This second location is chosen to honor all citizens of other nations that perished that day and since from evil terrorism.

9:40 A.M.I will then proceed to The Giant Shopping Center on Chain Bridge Road to sound Taps at  in honor of all the military and civilians killed as American Flight 77 struck the Pentagon.

10:06 A.M., the time that United Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, PA., I will sound Taps at the McLean Volunteer Fire Station to honor all of the heroic police and fire fighters who gave their lives that day in order to save hundreds more.

After sounding the final Taps, I will play a verse of America The Beautiful as a way of remembering all of the innocent citizens that perished as a result of these horrific attacks, and also for those that have since sacrificed their lives for the freedoms that we Americans must never take for granted. Please observe a moment of silence at these times on September 11, 2011.
