Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Julian Tamayo

Whiz Kids is a new feature that highlights the accomplishments of local kids.

Junior Julian Tamayo was selected to receive the Student Peace Award in recognition of his role as co-president of McLean High School’s branch of Interact, an organization devoted to international humanitarian action. In concert with the McLean Rotary Club, students in Interact assemble and donate a Shelter Box, annually, to help victims of natural disasters.

Students are selected for the Peace Award based on four factors:

  • demonstrated commitment to peace by engaging in activities that strive to end conflict either locally or globally
  • demonstrated efforts to discuss or otherwise resolve potentially controversial issues within the school or community in order to bring about positive resolutions to those issues
  • demonstrated efforts to promote the understanding of divisive issues and situations in order to bridge language, ethnic, racial, religious, or class differences
  • demonstrated efforts to resolve conflicts among students or members of the community who feel isolated or alienated

As a member of four honor societies, Julian tutors students in the subjects in which he excels: English, mathematics, and Spanish. In addition, he participates in the McLeadership program, providing counseling and assistance to five incoming freshmen to ease their transition to high school, before their entry and throughout the year.

“Lead by example” is Julian’s motto. He has spent two years in the McLean High School Leadership program, offered by Ms. Wagoner and Ms. Truesdell, and he feels they have taught him the vital skills of an accomplished leader.

Julian is enthusiastically drawn to community service and belives that participating in the Peace Corps might be an interesting and satisfying experience.

Each week McLean Patch will  highlight the accomplishments of local children and teens.  We seek your suggestions for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that you would like to see honored and recognized. We want to hear about these amazing children!
