UPDATE: Severe Thunderstorm WARNING Now in Effect

McLean, Fairfax County and much of the Washington Metro Area is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m.

We're already hearing thunder in McLean.

The area is also under a flash flood watch because of the amount of rain expected in a short period of time, according to the National Weather Service.

This Afternoon: Showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. High near 87. South wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.


Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between midnight and 3am, then a chance of showers after 3am. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. Low around 70. Calm wind becoming north between 5 and 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Saturday: A chance of showers before 8am. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 89. North wind between 6 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
