Winter Storm Warning Issued for Tuesday; Latest McLean Forecast

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the entire Washington metro area from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday, and McLean could see 7 inches by day's end, according to the latest forecast.

The weather service upgraded the earlier winter storm watch Monday afternoon.

Northern Virginia overall could see 4 to 6 inches of snow accumulate, with the heaviest snow falling late Tuesday morning and into the afternoon, according to the warning. McLean's forecast calls for 3 to 7 inches, with Tuesday night's low expected to be around 6 degrees and wind chill values of -12.

The storm could bring the heaviest snow to the Washington metro area since 2011, and freezing temperatures could make for difficult commutes, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. 

“A winter storm is getting ready to deliver a wicked one-two punch to area motorists with arctic temperatures and potentially six inches of snowfall,” spokesman Lon Anderson said in a statement.

“Drivers who must venture out should make sure their vehicles are prepared and to drive cautiously and defensively. Also, keep an emergency kit in the trunk should you run into any problems during your commute as the warning does extend from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.”

Wind gusts Tuesday night could reach 25 mph, according to the winter storm warning.

Roads will be covered in snow and slippery. The blowing snow will make it hard to see, reducing visibility to below a half-mile at times. Traveling may be dangerous Tuesday.

Both the morning and evening commutes could be affected by the weather. 

A winter storm warning means the area will see heavy snow with severe winter weather conditions. Residents should only travel in an emergency.

The National Weather Service suggests keeping an extra flashlight, food and water in your car.
