Weekend Planner: 'The King and I,' Food Festival and More

The weekend is only one day away. How are you going to spend it?

  • When/Where: Evening performances start at 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Matinee shows start at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. is located at 1551 Trap Road, Vienna.
  • Why Go: "Getting to Know You," "I Have Dreamed," and "Shall We Dance" are just a few Broadway standards from this Rodgers & Hammerstein classic musical. And if you haven't visited the Filene Center yet this summer, this is the last play of the season.
  • Pricing: Tickets start at $20.

  • When/Where: The festival starts at 11 a.m. Saturday and noon Sunday at 8501 Lewinsville Road, McLean.
  • Why Go: "Smell the aromas from the outdoor grills, partake of Kibbee, Chicken Kebabs, Falafel, Fattoush, Hummus, and Stuffed Grape Leaves, or any number of other delicious menu choices, including a $12 Roast Lamb Dinner served on Saturday from 6:00-9:00 and all day on Sunday.  Then relax with a cup of coffee and mouth-watering pastry.  Choose from Middle Eastern favorites, such as Baklawa, Maamoul, Namoura, or Ghraybeh, or good old-fashioned American favorites, from cakes to cookies to brownies and fudge."

3. Labor Day Concert at the U.S. Capitol

  • When/Where: The concert starts at 8 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of East Capitol and First streets in Washington. (Gates open at 3 p.m., Open Rehearsal at 3:30 p.m.)
  • Why Go: Catch the National Symphony Orchestra for free. As long as the weather holds out, it could be a lovely night for a concert. 
  • Pricing: Free to attend.

  • When/Where: The promotion runs all day Saturday and Sunday (and the first Saturday and Sunday of any month.)
  • Why Go: "Celebrate Labor Day weekend with Bank of America’s Museums on Us and enjoy free access to two Washington D.C.  museums: National Museum of Women in the Arts and The Phillips Collection. 5. 11th Annual Page-to-Stage Festival

  • When/Where: The festival runs from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday and 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday at the .
  • Why Go: According to the Kennedy Center's website, "This three-day event offers free readings and open rehearsals of plays and musicals being developed by local, regional, and national playwrights, librettists, and composers. Don't miss your chance for a first look at outstanding works for upcoming season premieres!"
  • Pricing: Free to attend.
