5 Things to Know about the Northern Virginia Technology Council

The organization is headed by McLean neighbor Bobbie Kilberg.

McLean resident Bobbie Kilberg, formerly a high-ranking official in the first George Bush administration, leads the Northern Virginia Technology Council, reputed to be the largest technology council in the U.S.

McLean Rotary invited Kilberg to talk about this trade association for the technology community in Northern Virginia. Kilberg could not attend last week's meeting. Instead Allison Gilmore, NVTC director of communications and public relations, spoke.

Here are 5 things Gilmore shared with the Rotarians about NVTC:

1. The NVTC offices are in that weird looking building near Dulles International Airport. The building belongs to the Center for Innovative Technology. CIT is a nonprofit corporation founded by the state of Virginia that accelerates the next generation of technology and technology companies. NVTC rents space.

2. With Bobbie Kilberg's phone list, no surprise NVTC has invited the men running for president of the United States to speak to their members. Mitt Romney speaks Friday in Reston. Herman Cain spoke in November, just before he dropped out of the race. NVTC has also invited McLean neighbor and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Texas Congressman Ron Paul and President Obama.

3. Microsoft Director and Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer speaks in April at the annual Titans in Technology event. McLean neighbor Steve Case was last year's speaker.

4. Membership: Sixty percent are tech companies. Others include bankers, lawyers and accountants, whose clients are tech companies. Fifty percent have one to nine employees. “We do a lot of networking and events . . all of our members are looking to meet new clients,” Gilmore said.

5. NVTC brings together the university professors who teach and conduct technology research with technology business entrepreneurs in March. The presidents of George Mason University and Virginia Tech are members of the NVCT board of directors.
