McLean BizBuzz: Cardinal Bank Awards Grant; Cvent Acquisitions; New Gannett CFO

Cardinal Bank Grant

announced this week that it awarded $5,000 to the Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools. The Foundation supports “the mission of a world-class school system to inspire, enable and empower students to meet high economic standards,” according to a BusinessWire press release.

The Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools is managed by a partnership between the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and Fairfax County Public Schools. 

“We know that this Community Fund grant will impact students in Fairfax County, supporting creative and innovative initiatives that directly influence financial and technological literacy in our schools,” Kevin Reynolds, regional president of the bank, was quoted as saying in the BusinessWire press release.

Cvent

McLean-based , an event management software company, and according to its website, “the world’s largest meetings and event management technology company,” acquired two separate event management app companies in recent weeks. 

The company purchased SeedLabs on June 13 for $4.2 million according to The Washington Post Capital Business, and then on June 19, purchased CrowdCompass for $10 million.  Both are companies that build mobile apps. 

SeedLabs creates apps for special events including the National Cherry Blossom Festival, ESPN’s X Games, the Preakness, and the Kentucky Derby.  CrowdCompass builds apps for business and association events and trade shows. 

 Reggie Aggarwal, Founder and CEO told Washington Post Capital Business, "Events are going mobile.  When you go to an event and you’re not in your office or at your house, that’s when you rely more on…a smartphone or iPad because you need to access the information."

New Gannett CFO

Gannett Co., has appointed Victoria Harker chief financial officer.  Harker will join Gannett July 23, from AES Corporation, where she served as chief financial officer and president of global business services.  Prior to that position, she served as acting CFO and Treasurer at MCI.

“This is a terrific time to be joining Gannett as it moves rapidly to execute its blueprint for growth,” said Harker. “I look forward to being a part of this leading media company, which has a tremendous history, record of success and exciting plans for the future.”

Gracia C. Martore, Gannett president and chief executive officer, said in a Gannett press release, “I am delighted to welcome someone with Victoria’s broad-ranging experience in senior financial and operational roles to our leadership team as we strategically reshape the company for the digital age.”

Harker lives with her husband and three sons in McLean.
