Weather Service: Winter Advisory of Snow, Sleet in Effect Until 1pm Saturday

ORIGINAL STORY. 11pm Jan 20.The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Fairfax County and the region until 1 pm Saturday.

Precipitation type...snow...sleet and freezing rain. Accumulations...a coating to one inch of snow and sleet. a trace up to a tenth inch from freezing rain.

Timing...snow will mix with sleet and freezing rain after midnight. precipitation will change to all freezing rain predawn Saturday....and eventually to all rain from southeast to northwest after sunrise. precipitation will end by early Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures...low temperatures tonight in the upper 20s and lower 30s. highs Saturday in the upper 30s and lower 40s. * winds...east 5 to 10 mph becoming north Saturday * impacts...wintry precipitation will cause slippery traveling conditions late tonight through Saturday morning. ice will accumulate on trees and powerlines.

Cancellations...Fairfax County Public Schools have canceled all extracurricular activities tomorrow, including interscholastic competitions, team practices, field trips, professional learning and training courses, all adult and community education classes and recreation programs in schools.

The McLean Community Center and the Old Firehouse Teen Center will open on time, but all classes are cancelled.

Tips for driving. . . Beware of slippery driving conditions. Fairfax County has offered the following driving tips:

  • Clear the snow and ice from your vehicle’s roof, hood and trunk and especially from the windows, mirrors and lights.
  • Always wear your seat belt.
  • Leave a few minutes early.
  • Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges.
  • Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles.
