Succeeding versus Struggling: Tutoring Can Make the Difference

With the first grading period coming to an end, it is probably already evident what classes will pose a challenge for your student. Whether a student is doing okay or having difficulties, one-on-one tutoring can help improve study skills, organization, and confidence when it comes to class work.

With the many challenging classes offered at our local schools, honor students might find the assistance of a tutor helps keep them on track with their assignments. Having one role-model tutor on your team can help students have their questions answered, questions perhaps they didn’t want to ask in front of their peers or interrupt a busy teacher with. Tutors can make the difference in several areas; here are a few that stand out to us from our local perspective:

Chemistry – Whether regular, honors, or AP, Chemistry can come as a shock to many students. It’s the first time they’ve had to combine math and science skills. This one tends to be a learning curve for so many students that we have several tutors that specialize specifically on Chemistry.

Algebra II – Students who struggled with Algebra I can continue to struggle in Algebra II as it builds on the knowledge learned in the previous class. When this is the case, our tutors help the student keep pace with their current class, but also takes time to review past concepts that were either learned incompletely or forgotten.

World History – In McLean, most students take two years of World History. These classes cover a vast amount of subject matter and jumps around in both time and place. It’s a struggle for any student to keep straight! Tutors help students develop timelines to make sense of this nonlinear class. Time is also spent developing schedules for essay writing and editing.

SAT and ACT Test Prep - ACT and SAT test scores determine many outcomes in a student’s college career including admission and qualifying for scholarships. One-on-one tutoring focuses upon the areas the student needs to specifically improve and skills for taking the exams. We offer FREE practice tests and write up a personalized report analyzing the results and offering study recommendations.

These are just a few of the areas we offer specialized tutoring in!
