McLean Community Center Board Eyes Multi-Million Dollar Upgrades

The governing board of the McLean Community Center is considering renovation and expansion of the Ingleside Drive facility.

The McLean Community Center Governing Board is one step closer to making a decision about renovating and expanding the current facility on Ingleside Drive.

The board's capital facilities commitee reviewed three concept plans on Tuesday night at the first in a series of "milestone" meetings.

The board hired SWSG, a design engineering firm based in Herndon, to conceptualize options for renovating and expanding the center.

"This is an important meeting for us to get our own sense of the options that are on board," said Chad Quinn, chairman of the governing board's capital facilities committee.

The concepts offer different options for renovation and expansion. Concept A is the smallest scale expansion, adding 4,785 to the existing facility. Concept C expands the existing space by roughly 30 percent.

Concept A includes:

  • a 4,785 square foot addition to the exisiting facility to make it 12,077 square feet in total
  • a reconfigured administrative space in the Swinson Lounge and an expansion of the adminstrative space in the performing arts area
  • a 3,120 square foot reconfigured entrance lobby and social area
  • adding 46 parking spaces to the existing lot, which currently has 223 parking spaces
  • Total project cost is projected to be $3.49 million

Concept B includes:

  • a 6,885 square foot addition to the exisiting facility (for a space of 13,907 square feet in total)
  • a 2,483 square foot rehearsal/multi-purpose space
  • a 3,137 square foot reconfigured entrance lobby and social area
  • 265 parking spaces
  • Total project cost is projected to be $3.72 million

Concept C includes:

  • a 9,285 square foot addition to the existing facility (15,672 square feet in total)
  • a 2,876 square foot multi-purpose space
  • a 1,202 square foot rehearsal space
  • more conference room space
  • 269 parking spaces
  • Total project cost is projected to be $4.48 million

SWSG fielded feedback about the location of the community center's lobby, the location of toilets in the center, the amount of available parking and the location of the community center's entrance. The firm will take the committee's feedback and return with 3D models at the next milestone meeting on Dec. 4.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this article incorrectly explained the scope of Concept C, which will expand the existing community center by about 30 percent, not double the existing space, as Patch originally reported.

In an email to Patch, committee chairman Chad Quinn explained that the associated prices attached to each concept are "purely directional costs based on high level concept plans. These preliminary numbers are not inclusive of the total costs and should not be construed as definitive costs."
