Moms Chat: Time With Friends, At the Movies

Taking Time for Mom

Whether you work inside or outside of the home (or both) moms are very busy people.  The demands of raising children and managing a family are numerous and often competing.  It’s hard to find time to take care of yourself, but, oh, so necessary.

Even if it’s just a few minutes of solitude late in the day, having time to oneself helps to create a better environment for everyone.  Moms need time to recharge their batteries and connect with their inner selves.

Below, our McLean Patch Moms relate what they do in order to take care of themselves.  Please let us what you do to take care of yourself too!

I make time with friends a priority.  I am fortunate to have lived here for awhile and  develop some great friendships over the years.

I have been in a monthly dinner club with the same women since Sept 1997 - we started as a group of single ladies who went out at 10 and now we’re a group of moms who are home by 10, but we’ve sort of grown up together and enjoyed some great meals in DC’s finest restaurants.  I also try to see girlfriends on weekday mornings to catch up and get some perspective - early morning coffees with working moms before they head downtown, pre-carpool lunches with school moms to find out the latest news.

One other treat I’ve recently discovered  is the weekday movie.  It sounds indulgent but really, it’s quite frugal and it works well with other stay-at-home moms (or a Realtor husband who, after working all weekend, has an occasional weekday off).  All movies at Tysons before noon are $6 and if your kids are in school, no sitter needed.  Plus, you’re less likely to want popcorn and M&M’s at 11AM than you are at 7PM.  Anyone wanna meet me at the movies?
