New Year's Day at the Movies: Check Out These Oscar Contenders

There are plenty of great movies in the theaters.

It's not every Tuesday that you get a midweek break. So how are you going to spend New Year's Day?

If you're interested in heading to the movies, there's plenty to see.

The nominations for this year's Academy Awards won't be released for a few weeks yet, but insiders speculate many of these will be in the running.

  • Les Miserables: After much promotion and fanfare, a new musical film interpretation of Les Misérables opened on Christmas Day.
  • Silver Linings Playbook: What makes Silver Linings Playbook so endearing and what will make it so enduring as a new fan favorite is the straightforward, unflinching way it portrays those disorders while maintaining a surprising sense of charm and a great comedic heart.
  • Django Unchained: This is a great, but ultra-violent genre buster.
