Update: Snowstorm Power Outages Start in Fairfax County

About 10 customers were without power Wednesday morning in McLean, and more may lose power as wet, heavy snow continues Wednesday.

Update 7 p.m. Wednesday - A few thousand people are without power in Fairfax County, mostly along the I-495 corridor in southern Fairfax County.

In all, about 2,350 are without power tonight in Fairfax County, according to Dominion Virginia Power.

Across all of Northern Virginia, there are more than 13,000 without power. More than 90,000 are without power statewide.

The heaviest snow and related power outages tonight are in Albemarle County (near Charlottesville) and near Virginia Beach. 

Update Noon Wednesday - All McLean residents should have their power back by now, according to Dominion Virginia Power. The number of people without power across all of Fairfax County was down to about two dozen by noon.

The majority of outages in the state are south and west of Fairfax County, particularly in the great Charlottesville area, Culpeper and elsewhere.

Update 9:30 a.m. - The number of people in Fairfax County without power has been reduced to just 150. The ten people without power in McLean are still without power, but crews are working hard to get power restored.

Dominion Virginia Power officials were expecting widespread outages with this storm, they said yesterday. Additional utility crews and trucks are operating throughout the storm.

"We have moved additional crews and contractors into the area so that they are staged near to where we anticipate the most damage from the storm," said Dominion Virginia Power's Le-Ha Anderson. "In addition, we have made arrangements for utilities south of us to come onto our system to help if we have the outages that this storm could cause."

If You Lose Power 

  • To report an outage to Dominion Power, call 1-866-DOM-HELP (1-866-366-4357). To see Dominion's online outage map, click here. 
  • You should report your power outage to Dominion Power even if you think your neighbor already has reported it. It will help them pinpoint the cause of the outage and speed repairs.
  • Customers can go to www.dom.com from their smart phone and it will direct them to the Dominion mobile site, where they can report power outages and get updates.

About 1,050 people in Fairfax County are without power this morning, according to data from Dominion Virginia Power.

Ten of those people are in McLean just east of I-495 near Old Dominion Drive. An estimated restoration time is not available for those customers.

More than 5,800 people are without power in the Northern Virginia region, and more than 50,000 are without power in the Shenendoah Valley and Western Piedmont area, particularly south of Charlottesville.
