How Did McLean Vote in the 2013 Virginia Governor's Race?

McLean supports its neighbor Terry McAuliffe — mostly.

McLean resident Terry McAuliffe is heading to the Governor's Office, and his hard-fought victory Tuesday included winning all of the precincts in the greater McLean area.

Statewide, McAuliffe's victory over Republican Ken Cuccinelli was by less than 55,000 votes, according to unofficial results from the State Board of Election. Those results paint much of the state red, but McAuliffe won enough support in the so-called urban crescent — Northern Virginia, Richmond and Henrico County down to Hampton Roads — and chipped away at Cuccinelli's margins in more rural parts of the state.

A quick look at 22 precincts in the greater McLean area — generally, up to Great Falls and west to Leesburg Pike —  shows McAuliffe besting Cuccinelli in each one. In some parts, by slim margins.

The closeness of the race wasn't lost on McAuliffe, a former Democratic National Committee chairman who ran as a moderate this year.

"Virginia and America have seen contentious races before and every time, we end up coming together to pursue the common good," he told a fired-up crowd in the Sheraton Premier Tysons Corner ballroom Tuesday night. "… So while I promise you tonight that I will be Governor for all Virginians, the real test is my actions when I take office. I expect you to hold me to my pledge to work with both sides."

In this section of Fairfax County, McAuliffe won by the largest margin in the Magarity Precinct, which has polls at Westgate Elementary School in Falls Church, capturing nearly 63 percent of the vote there.

To the west of that, he carried the Tysons Precinct with 60 percent of the vote; he won the Pimmit Precinct to the east with about 62 percent of the vote. And in the McLean Precinct, which has polls at the Lewinsville Center, he got about 58.6 percent of the vote. Results from the State Board of Elections are unofficial until certified.

McAuliffe won 52.5 percent of the vote in his home precinct, which has polls at Spring Hill Elementary School, compared to Cuccinelli's 42 percent. Libertarian Robert Sarvis received about 5 percent of the vote in the Spring Hill Precinct.

Countywide, McAuliffe took home 176,092 votes in Fairfax County on Tuesday, or 58 percent, compared to 109,585 for Cuccinelli (or 36 percent) and 15,607 for Sarvis (about 5 percent).

In the McLean area, McAuliffe's slimmest margins were in the Cooper Precinct and the Salona No. 1 Precinct. Those polls are at Cooper Middle and Franklin Sherman Elementary, respectively. At each, he won about 48 percent of the vote, compared to Cuccinelli's 45 percent and Sarvis' 6 percent.

Likewise, the Great Falls and Westmoreland precincts had similar results. In those precincts, McAuliffe won 49.9 percent; Cuccinelli, 45.5 percent; Sarvis, 4.3 percent.

McAuliffe beat Cuccinelli by about 9 percentage points at the Langley Precinct and by better than 15 points at the Chain Bridge Precinct. Polls for both are at Langley High School.
