Report: Dick Black to Seek GOP Congressional Nomination

State Sen. Dick Black, R-Leesburg, told NBC4 this week that he will seek his party's nomination for the congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf.

"I'm running," Black told the television station. "I'm going to be running so we just have to get the papers filed and that type of thing."

State Del. Barbara Comstock, a McLean Republican, announced earlier this week she would seek the GOP nomination, and at least three Democrats have cast their hat in the ring.

The Loudoun Times called Black "a hard-line conservative and one of the fiercest pro-life advocates in the Virginia General Assembly."

In early 2003, Black sent plastic fetus dolls to his colleagues in the Virginia General Assembly with a letter asking, "Would you kill this child?," according to an Associated Press report at the time.

“Dick Black’s entry into Virginia’s 10th district race guarantees a sprint to the right, as both Comstock and Black rush to prove their allegiance to the same dysfunctional fringe of their party responsible for the shutdown of our nation’s government,” David Bergstein of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said in a statement.

Political observers are watching whether Republicans will choose to select their nominee through a primary or convention. The latter almost guarantees the most conservative candidate will win.
