A Tour of Bordeaux - Regions and Vintages - $40

Bordeaux is the most famous red wine region in the world – and often the most expensive. But you can enjoy a great bottle of Bordeaux without breaking the bank.

Join us to learn about the famous Classification of 1855, the differences in Left Bank and Right Bank Bordeaux, and the best ways to cellar and savor Bordeaux in any price range. We’ll focus on outstanding values from 2009 and three selections from the often-overlooked 2004 harvest – some of the best Bordeaux still in the market to enjoy now.

White Bordeaux
Chateau Lafont-Menaut Pessac-Léognan 2011 – Stunning value in Right Bank white Bordeaux from the Perrin family, owners of Chateau Carbonnieux.

Right Bank
Chateau Recougne Bordeaux Supérieur 2009 – Mainly Merlot with about 20% Cabernet Franc for spice and drinking well now. Wine Spectator 88 points

Chateau Lyonnat Lussac-St. Emilion 2009 – A traditionally-styled Right Bank wine that shows extra layers of ripe fruit and spice character in 2009. Full-bodied, earthy, and fine value. Wine Advocate 88 points

Chateau La Vieille Cure Fronsac 2004 – A wine we chose to prove that it’s not only “big name” or Classified Growth Bordeaux that improves with age. Wine Advocate 90 points

Ch Mondot St. Emilion Grand Cru 2004 – We love how the overlooked 2004s are showing. This Grand Cru is in full bloom with good fruit remaining but plenty of earth, cedar, and smoke as well.

Left Bank
Chateau Malmaison Moulis 2009 – From the Moulis AOC in the heart of the Medoc, this Merlot/Cabernet blend from the Rothschild family shows pretty fruit and a nice dose of toasty oak. Wine Spectator 87 points

Chateau Tayac Margaux 2009 – A very classic take on Margaux and a decidedly un-classic price. Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot for body and Cab Franc and Petit Verdot and a little oak deliver very traditional Margaux perfume.

La Chapelle de Calon St-Estèphe 2009 – Great value to be found in the second wines of top estates in great vintages. Here, the “parent” is Third Grown Ch Colon Segur and the “little” wine is a gem, full and chocolaty and delicious now.

Chateau Gloria St. Julian 2009 – Never disappointing, always delightful, Ch Gloria hit new heights in 2009 – according to Robert Parker (93 points), this drinks like a classed grown wine. One of the best Glorias ever.
