WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A FEMALE OFFICER IN THE US ARMED FORCES?? Come to the
McLean Area Branch meeting on November 19th at 7 p.m. at the McLean Community
Center and find out first hand from three talented women who served
successfully in three separate military services and will share their
experiences and observations with you. Past President Mary Lou Melley has a
daughter who was an Air Force pilot, Mary Melley Blissard, and is currently a
United Airlines pilot (See 1st picture below). She managed to do all this while
being the mother of three children! Sandy Lawrence is the AAUW Northern
District Representative and the President of the Woodbridge Branch of AAUW. She
is a retired Navy Commander with over 24 years of service. A highlight of her
career is that Sandy was the first Combat Systems Officer on the USS Nimitz
(CVN 68) and did a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf (see picture
below). Our third panelist, Mary Fuller see picture below) retired from the
Army as a Colonel after close to 30 years of service. Her career culminated as
the Chief of Staff to the Army Acquisition Executive, the Assistant Secretary
of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology. She was on the Army Ski
Team 1980-81 and was the 1980 winner of the Women’s Nordic/Alpine event and the
1981 Women’s Nordic Champion. She is married to LTC Gerald F. Monin, USA,
Retired. They will share with you why they joined, observations about their
experiences and answer questions. Come and meet these talented women and learn
what it is like to have a career in a largely male community.
