The Master of Montefalco: Wines of Paolo Bea

Thursday, October 3 @ 7pm  - Course Fee $40

To call Paolo Bea "one of Umbria's leading producers" (as Wine Advocate and others have) is somewhat to miss the point.  This is the most distinctive, pure, and "down to earth" estate we work with.  The Bea family grows grapes, olives, grain, fruits, vegetables and meat animals on their 15 hectare farm, all without insecticides, chemical fertilizers, or other chemicals.  Their motto, as stated by Paolo:  “Nature should be observed, heard, [and] understood, not dominated.”  And, as they grow their food and grapes, so they make their wines.

These unusual, sometimes volatile, often slightly oxidized, whites and reds made with all native yeasts and no added sulfur can vary wildly from year to year.  And, their reliance on Montefalco's often tough and tannic Sagrentino grape can make things "interesting" as well.  But, they are always some of the most distinctive wines we know and often among the most delicious, satisfying, and delightful.

Join Ryne Hazzard of Potomac Selections, Paolo Bea's local distributor, as he shares his experiences visiting the family and winery and pours a truly exciting set of Italian gems including:

Cistercensi "Coenobium" Vino da Tavola Bianco 2011
Santa Chiara "Pagliaro" Umbria Bianco 2010

Montefalco Rosso Vigna San Valentino 2008
Montefalco Rosso Riserva "Pipparello" 2006
Rosso de Veo Umbria 2006
Sagrantino di Montefalco Secco 2006

As far as we know, this is the first time such a wide range of Bea wines have been open to taste in this area.
