Deck Your House and Win $100,000 for Fairfax County Public Schools

Get out the lights and holly. A photo of your decorated house could earn $100,000 for local schools and $500 for your electric bill.

Have you decorated your house for the holidays? Grab your camera.

Patch.com is launching a nationwide contest to find the best dressed home in communities across the country, including Vienna. And the winner’s school district will receive $100,000, no strings attached.

With your votes, Vienna could come out on top and win money for Fairfax County Public Schools.

Here’s how the contest works. Beginning on Dec. 8 and continuing through Dec. 26, you can nominate your home by uploading a photo to the contest entry form on the site. During that same time period you and your neighbors will also be able to vote for your favorite festive home.

The winning entry will be forwarded to a national Patch judge that will select 24 finalists. Each finalist will receive $500 they can apply to their December electric bill.

From Dec. 30 through Jan. 8 you will be able to vote for the Best Decked House in all of Patch. The grand prize winner’s school district will receive a $100,000 check from Patch.

So, get out your lights, ladders and competitive spirit. Whether your style is sophisticated or silly, we want you to dress up your house in the name of good cheer and local schools.

Really? Patch.com can't find a better and more productive way to reward communities? A contest on who can waste the most electricity? If the money is to go to the schools, why not focus on a contest that would benefit all schools whose communities might choose to participate. Some ideas: Sign up to clean up/improve school grounds, Sign up to volunteer in at-risk schools, who can get the most parents and teacher to attend a school board meeting... Sorry to be a Grinch but this contest seems really inappropriate considering the state of the economy!
