Veterans Day 2011 -Places and events honoring those who served.

Thanking those who put on a uniform and defended us.

Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11. Here are some spots to pay respects:

McLean - American Legion holds annual observance and program at  the Veterans Memorial McLean High School. It's wonderful. 11 am in the parking lot in the front of the school.

Herndon - American Legion Wayne Kidwell Post 184, along with the Town of Herndon, will hold its annual Veterans Day Observance at the Veterans Memorial on the Herndon Town Green at 11 a.m.

The Town Green is located behind the Herndon Municipal Building, 777 Lynn St. The observance will be held at 11 a.m., and will include the Herndon High School Junior Naval ROTC presenting the Colors. This year's featured guest speaker will be Col. William Campenni of the US Air Force/Air National Guard.

Arlington Cemetery - the annual Veteran's Day ceremony commences precisely at 11 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans' organizations and remarks from dignitaries.  For more info, click here.

Mount Vernon - Veteran's Day Concert Featuring the USAF Strings at 3 p.m. Admission required for entry to Mt. Vernon, but no tickets needed for concert. Mount Vernon celebrates Veteran’s Day by admitting active duty, retired and former military personnel free-of-charge.

Great Falls  - Veterans Day Ceremony at Great Falls Freedom Memorial, 9830 Georgetown Pike (behind the Great Falls Library), at 11 a.m.

Great Falls resident Lawrence McKinley, who served as a rotary wing aviator in a Medical Evacuation Company in the Army and the Army National Guard and in combat in the Vietnam War and Desert Storm, will be the guest speaker at this annual event. Members of the Great Falls Village Green Day School kindergarten class will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and the Madrigal Choir of Langley High School will provide music.

In case of rain, the ceremony will move into the Library's meeting room.  

In DC:

Vietnam Veterans Memorial - 1 p.m. Color guard, speakers and a wreath-laying ceremony pay tribute to all who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War America's other conflicts.

Vietnam Women's Memorial - 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.  Vietnam-era veterans and the children of veterans tell stories "in their own voices" about their experiences. There will also be stories featuring soldiers of the current struggles in Iraq and Afghanistan and other locations around the world.

World War II Memorial - 9 a.m.  - Wreath laying ceremony.Navy Memorial - noon. The Naval District of Washington will lay a wreath at the Lone Sailor Statue in commemoration of Veterans Day. As part of the Memorial’s Authors on Deck book lecture series, authors Dwight Zimmerman and John Gresham will present Uncommon Valor: The Medal of Honor and The Six Warriors Who Earned it in Afghanistan and Iraq.
