My Story

Lyme disease awareness is an issue of great importance to our community.  The incidence of Lyme disease has steadily increased in Northern Virginia over the past ten years. Patients with untreated Lyme infections are often unable to work and live significantly limited lives.  Without diagnosis and treatment, a chronic Lyme patient is left to suffer an unexplained, debilitating disease.

Lyme disease awareness is critical to early detection and treatment which hold the key to successfully beating this disease.  I was fortunate enough to be aware of the risks of Lyme disease when I became infected in early July.   Thanks to the efforts of Delegate Barbara Comstock (R-34), new Lyme disease legislation was signed into law this year.  In the midst of news releases regarding Virginia's historical legislation, I became aware of Lyme disease and the symptoms.  A high fever in early July sent me to my doctor who immediately suggested a blood test for Lyme disease.  After an initial negative test, I tested positive two weeks later and began treatment.

With the possible consequences of a missed Lyme infection at stake, I am grateful for the tireless work of Delegate Comstock and all of the many legislators and advocates who supported her in making Virginia's historical legislation possible. After my first four weeks of antibiotic treatment, I am confident that I will fully recover. Thank you, Delegate Comstock, for helping me and many like me at this difficult time.
