ASK THE TRAINER – Helping you make better decisions for your body

Over the summer, my readings gravitated to a multitude of articles on fasting, cleansing and gluten free diets.  Let’s consider the results.

There is a lot of confusion about how the body “cleanses” itself of toxins and if indeed you really need to help the liver “cleanse” itself.  The two most prominent reasons why a person considers fasting or cleansing are to lose weight and feel better.  BUT DO THEY REALLY WORK?

There is no scientific research (to date) that has proven that “cleansing” or “detoxing” diets do what they say they do.  For example, some reasons why you might lose weight and might feel better are (a) the diets increase your water intake, significantly, (b) the diets reduce your caloric intake, sometimes to dangerously low levels and (c) the diet promoters ask you to buy and take their supplements.  Too few calories can lead to a breakdown of lean (muscle) tissue rather than fat tissue, and can cause sugar and electrolyte imbalances.

Researchers have looked at how the liver functions and what (if any) impact these “diets” have on its ability to function better.  Peer review research has proven there is no such link!

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Focus your energy and attention to eating a more natural, organic diet. Eat more fresh fruits, veggies and meats and seafood that use little or no pesticides, antibiotics and/or hormones.  Drink more water!  Water makes up 70% of our body and is the most effective “cleansers” for the liver and kidneys.  It’s also one of the best energy producers!  Being hydrated helps increase the amount of oxygen into your cells so they perform better and increase your energy production.  Increases in the hydration of connective tissues and muscles help them move better and, therefore, you move better too!

Now there are foods that may have a deleterious effect on a person, such as gluten for the individual with irritable bowel syndrome and other gastro intestinal ailments.  However, there’s no evidence that gluten free diets are more effective for weight loss than a balanced, reduced calorie diet.   Individuals who suffer from osteoarthritis symptoms will see a benefit from reducing their red meat intake and increasing their intake of grains, fish and legumes.  These foods seem to naturally reduce the inflammation markers within our body’s cells. The more we eat organic, less- processed foods, and the more water we drink, the more WE will naturally “detox” and “cleanse” our bodies on a daily basis.
