The McLean Ear - McLean Neighbors Meet, Honor Prince Harry

We Hear to Tell

Several McLean neighbors met Prince Harry this week. Yes, the Prince Harry who is third in line to the British throne.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell presented Prince Harry with the Distinguished Humanitarian Leadership award from the Atlantic Council. Mika Brzezinski, who grew up in McLean, hosted the Atlantic Council's honors program with her Morning Joe partner Joe Scarborough.

The guest list also included McLean neighbors Zbigniew Brzezinski, Mika's dad, and former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), who is chairman of the Council.

This was the prince's first official visit to Washington and it lasted maybe 24 hours.

But back to the neighbors. U.S. News reported that Powell said at the presentation: "Apart from recognizing his contributions to the humanitarian projects, I would be remiss if I didn't note that his presence has altered the normal demographic make up of our audience," Powell joked. "We have a record number of young, single women... You saw them outside. I also have to say the average age for an Atlantic Council dinner has dropped 25 years and for that we really, really thank you."

Prince Harry told Powell: "For a captain in the British Army to be introduced by such a world-renowned soldier and statesman is truly humbling and a little terrifying," he said, according to The Telegraph, of London.

The prince, 27, who joined the British armed forces in 2006 is an Afghanistan veteran. He was recognized for his unrelenting support of wounded servicemen and women through a foundation he established with his older brother, Prince William, U.S. News reported.

The Huffington Post reported that a black-tie dinner crowd of more than 800 attended the Monday night awards ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, D.C.

The non-partisan Atlantic Council every year awards individuals and groups for achievements in diplomacy, the military, business, humanitarian work and artistic endeavors. Since its founding in 1961-1962, the Council has been a preeminent, non partisan institution devoted to promoting transatlantic cooperation and international security.
