Saturday Afternoon Update: Details of Fatal Toll Road Accident

Five Women in One Car

UPDATE: Saturday Afternoon: A car carrying five women came through the E-Z pass lanes of the Dulles Toll Road Friday  night then stopped suddenly. The car was hit in the rear by a second car and then a third car. A 51-year-old woman who was sitting in the backseat of the first car was killed, according to a spokesperson for  the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority who gave a general account of the accident.

The E-Z pass lanes are the two far left-hand lanes of the Main Toll Plaza. The toll plaza is located just west of  Spring Hill Road in Tysons Corner.

The impact of the third car caused the most serious injuries in the accident that occured about 8:20 pm. in the westbound lanes of the Toll Road. The Fairfax County Fire Department reported that one person was trapped in a car and had to be extracted by firefighters after they arrived on the scene.The westbound lanes were closed to traffic until 10 pm. The lane are now open.

The First Department took the four women in the first car and the driver of the third car to Fairfax County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, a fire department spokesperson said. The victim, whose identity was not released, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, the  spokesperson said.

The driver of the second car was arrested. The charges have not been specified.  None of the names of anyone involved has been released by authorities. It appears that there were no passengers in the second and third cars.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police will probably return to the scene Sunday for further investigation, the spokesperson said. The Airports Authority operates the Toll Road and has its own police department which is investigating the accident.

Saturday Morning: The Westbound lanes of the Dulles Toll Road are open this morning.

The lanes reopened late last night.

Earlier Update: A male driver involved in the three-car accident on the Dulles Toll Road that resulted in one fatality has been arrested by Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police. a spokesman said Friday night.

Charges were pending against the man.

The spokesman said no names were available of either the woman who died in the accident, nor the man charged or the others who were injured.

The westbound lanes of the Toll Road are closed at the Main Toll Plaza. Traffic is coming off the Toll Road at Spring Hill Road. The Dulles Access Road and the eastbound Toll Road lanes are open.

If you need to go westbound on the Toll Road you must get on at Route 7 entrance ramp which is west of the accident site. The accident occurred between the Main Toll Plaza and the Route 7 exit.

Earlier Story: A woman was killed and five others were injured in a three car accident on the Dulles Toll Road just before the Route 7 exit, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said Friday night.

The accident occurred about 8:20 pm in the westbound lanes of the Toll Road between the main toll plaza and the exit to Route 7.The Airports Authority operates the Toll Road and their police force patrols the road.

The five injured were taken to Fairfax Hospital.

The westbound lanes will be closed until the completion of the investigation into the accident. The eastbound lanes are not affected.

It appears that the Dulles Access Road is also unaffected by the accident.
