Hey! Over Here! Fairfax County's Top 5 Locations for Crashes Involving Distracted Drivers

Crashes from distracted drivers increase in the region.

With the number of crashes involving distracted drivers increasing in Northern Virginia, the Fairfax County  Police Department is drawing attention to the problem with some attention-grabbing numbers.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, which began with Fairfax County police officers undergoing the department's first-ever distracted driver training session for FCPD officers. 

Distracted driving continues to be a major factor in crashes, and the numbers are growing steadily in Fairfax County. There were 1,060 crashes attributed to distracted driving in 2011, 1,128 in 2012 and 1,175 in 2013, according to Fairfax County Police statistics.

The top five locations for crashes involving distracted drivers in 2013 were: 

  • Colvin Run Road/Leesburg Pike
  • Georgetown Pike/Leesburg Pike
  • Leesburg Pike/Lewinsville Road
  • Fairfax County Parkway/Sunrise Valley Drive
  • Franconia Road/South Van Dorn Street.
