Missing Kayaker at Great Falls? Search to Continue Sunday

A red kayak was found floating.

A search for what rescuers believe is a missing kayaker will resume Sunday morning at 9 a.m. at Great Falls, after a red kayak was found floating in the waters, according to The Washington Post. It's believed the kayaker went missing Friday afternoon.

Waters were high and dangerous on the Potomac in the area where the kayak was found, after the area was soaked with rain late last week, an experienced kayaker told the newspaper.

Swift water rescue and US Park Police changed the status from a "search to a recovery yesterday [Friday] evening," the National Park Service posted at about 7 p.m. Saturday on their Facebook page.

The National Park Service, on its Great Falls Park Facebook page, says:

"There is an ongoing recovery search for a kayaker who is presumed missing on the river yesterday afternoon. Our thoughts are with the family in this difficult time.

We would like to remind everyone that the river is still pretty high compared to this season for the last couple years. The link below [The Perils at Great Falls] is from last year’s Washington Post article which has an interactive map displaying the dangers of the Potomac in the Great Falls area for those who may wander too close."
