Neighbors Helping Neighbors Save Home from Fire

Neighbors on East Avenue Call 911

Carlos Davila came out of his house in Chesterbrook to see his gardner, when he saw white smoke coming his neighbor's garage.

"We saw white smoke. Then we saw black smoke and we heard an explosion and we called 911," Davila said yesterday standing in the front yard of the neighbor's home.

His quick action brought the Fairfax County Fire Department to a two-story brick house on East Avenue just off Linway Terrace. A quick end to the small fire.  The gratitude of his neighbor Carrie Moore.

Fairfax County Fire Capt. David Sellers said the fire, which was confined to the garage, was under investigation. The damage was less than $2,000. There were no injuries. The family was not at home, he said.

"Thank goodness for the family, they have concerned neighbors who kept what could have been a major fire, a small fire," Capt. Sellers said.

The fire started adjacent to the door of the living quarters of the home, he said.

"I was concerned because of the car," Davila said. "If that had caught on fire, everything would have gone up in flames. The firefighters came so quickly. They were able to stop everything."

A shaken Carrie Moore said: "I really appreciate my street. Neighbors on my street who look out for each other and caught the fire before it became a tragedy." The house itself suffered no damage, she said.

She and her family have lived on the street for six years, she said. It's a friendly street where the neighbors know each other, Davila said.
