Prom and Grad Parties? Beware of Drinking and Driving, Police Say

McLean High students had an opportunity to use "drunk goggles" Wednesday as they drove a coned course, threw basketballs, and attempted sobriety field tests.

If it's prom and grad season, there are bound to be parties, and parents worry that some teens might drink and drive.

The legal drinking age, by the way, is 21 in Virginia.

Traffic Safety and School Resource Officers from Fairfax County demonstrated a few of the safety hazards of prom and graduation season Wednesday at McLean High School.

Students had an opportunity to use “drunk goggles” as they drove a coned course, threw basketballs, and attempted sobriety field tests.

In 2013, there were 1,786 crashes that involved young drivers in Fairfax County. The message from police on Wednesday? "Celebrate the season safely; please don’t get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol," they noted in their news release.
