Report: Kayaker Presumed Missing, Safe and Sound at Home in Reston
A kayaker recognized the kayak that was found and contacted authorities. Reston man had no idea there was a search going on, authorities told The Washington Post.
A kayaker whom many had feared had perished over the weekend in the rain-swollen, swirling waters of the Potomac River at Great Falls was actually home safe and sound in Reston, according to The Washington Post.
Dozens of rescuers, including officers from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, were searching the waters by boat and by helicopter all weekend.
The kayak was found Friday; on Saturday, someone recognized the kayak and contacted authorities.
When police went to the man's home in Reston and he didn't answer on Saturday, they thought he was still missing and were going to continue the search on Sunday.
After leaving a note, The Washington Post said, officers still did not hear from him. They returned Sunday, spoke to the man and called off the search. He told them he was wearing a life preserver and made it to shore and went home.
Authorities did not I.D. the kayaker.
