Sebold Sentenced Following Embezzlement from Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation

Sookyeong Kim Sebold ("Sophia Kim") to spend two years in prison, pay IRS restitution.

Sookyeong Kim Sebold was sentenced earlier this month for crimes in connection with her role in embezzling more than $800,000 from the DC-based Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation (KCFF), according to information from the Department of Justice.

Sebold was sentenced to two years in prison, three years of supervised released and more than $133,000 in financial restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. Sebold, who is also known as Sophia Kim, 52, is a former resident of McLean, DOJ reported.

The joint announcement regarding her sentencing came from Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Kathryn Keneally, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Tax Division; and Thomas J. Kelly, Special Agent in Charge of the IRS – Criminal Investigation’s Washington, D.C., Field Office.

She was convicted in December 2012 for failure to report the embezzled funds on her 2005 federal income tax return. She had embezzled money between 2002 and 2005, and used it for stock market trading, gambling and other personal expenses, according to the IRS.
