State Trooper Struck by Drunk Driver at Tysons Corner

Trooper was helping a tow truck remove a damaged vehicle from a separate crash.

Virginia State Police Trooper K.S. Fleenor is recovering Sunday after a drunk driver hit his patrol vehice just after midnight on Saturday on Interstate 495 in Tysons Corner.

Corinne N. Geller, public relations director for the Virginia State Police said that at about midnight, Fleenor had positioned his patrol vehicle in the left northbound travel lane on I-495 to assist a tow truck that was having difficulty removing a damaged vehicle in a separate crash.

Geller said Fleenor put his patrol vehicle behind the tow truck for the operator's safety while removing the vehicle.

Geller said Fleenor was seated inside his vehicle, with emergency lights on, when a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue going northbound rear-ended the patrol vehicle.

"The impact forced the trooper’s car into the previously damaged vehicle...which then pushed that vehicle into the rear of the tow truck," said Geller in a release.

"Trooper Fleenor and the tow truck operator were both taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital – where they were both treated and released."

The driver of the Oldsmobile, Christina M. Hirt, 30, of Alexandria, VA, refused treatment at the scene of the crash, Geller said. Hirt was charged with DUI.
