Beltway Lane Closings Overnight This Week

What A Mess!

The construction of the Silver Line Metro to Tysons and the HOT lanes (the new toll lanes) has meant huge traffic disruptions, especially during the overnight hours. Here's what McLean residents face this week:

Beltway Closings

I-495 North and South at Lewinsville Road overpass – Three lanes will close Monday through Saturday nights for painting. Expect intermittent full-road closures of up to 30 minutes, starting after midnight.

I-495 North to Exit 45A, Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) west – Ramp closed Monday through Thursday nights for steel beam erection.

The right thru lane of Northbound I-495  at Route 123. Closed overnight Friday, for construction of bridges for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project (The Silver Line).
The closing will occur from 9:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. Police will be onsite to guide traffic through this busy interchange.

Eastbound Dulles International Airport Access Highway (DIAAH) to close at Leesburg Pike (Route 7) overpass beginning overnights May 10.

Eastbound lanes of the DIAAH will be closed just west of the Route 7 exit overnights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. because of subway construction. These closures will occur for approximately one week, then intermittently as needed through July 2011.

The  rail construction crews will be working on a concrete structure called a "straddle bent" that will straddle two piers over the Airport Access Highway. This is part of the bridge flyover (or "guideway") that will carry future Metro tracks between Route 7 and the highway median.

Eastbound Airport Access Highway traffic will be detoured on to the westbound Airport Access Highway, which will be reconfigured to one-lane, two-way traffic before the Route 7 exit (the exit will remain open). Eastbound traffic will be restored shortly after the Route 7 overpasses.

REMINDER: 24/7 Operations for Construction at Orange Line Tie-in Next Two Weekends

Metro's Orange Line trains will be single-tracking between the East Falls Church and West Falls Church Metrorail stations throughout the weekend of weekend of May 14-15. Metrorail service will not be disrupted.

This work is related to the future tie-in of the extension to the existing Orange Line. Work will be taking place around the clock. Tie-in work requires several crews to work concurrently within a short window of time. Weekend Single tracking started May 6, and construction crews are scheduled to start at 10 p.m. They will work around the clock until 1 a.m. Monday, May 9 with full service to be restored by 4 a.m. Monday.

Nearby residents were notified that they may hear increased construction noise during this weekend, especially during daytime hours. Every effort will be made to minimize noise between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

All work is weather dependent and subject to change.  Additional single-tracking is scheduled for the  In case of inclement weather during these scheduled outages, crew will work the weekend of May 21-22.

Eastbound Tysons Boulevard Closures between Galleria Drive and Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) to Continue Next Week

The eastbound lanes of Tysons Boulevard will be closed from Galleria Drive to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, May 9 through Saturday, May 14, for pier and station work.

In addition, the turn lanes from Galleria Drive on to eastbound Tysons Boulevard will be closed. Westbound Tysons Boulevard traffic will remain open. Note: Galleria Drive only allows a right-turn on to International Drive and thus does not access Route 123.

Flagging Operation at Magarity/Olney Intersection Next Week

Beginning on or about Monday, May 9, Magarity and Olney Roads will be reduced to one lane where these busy roads intersect in the Falls Church/McLean area.

Dulles Metrorail crews will be restoring the curb line and gutter and installing a new storm drainage pipe.

Magarity Road is a popular thoroughfare for travelers between Route 7 and McLean. This work is related to the project's ongoing construction of a traction power substation on the southeast corner of Magarity and Olney roads.

Private entrances and driveways will be accessible at all times. Signage will be installed warning drivers that the flaggers and one-lane traffic are ahead.

Waterline Installation Continues Overnights at Leesburg Pike (Route 7)/Spring Hill Road Intersection in Tysons Corner; Detours Required

Crews are scheduled to continue installation of a major waterline at the intersection of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) and Spring Hill Road. This will require the overnight closures of all lanes of northbound Spring Hill Road for a 150-foot stretch north of Route 7, beginning after 9 p.m.

Traffic from Route 7 will be detoured to Westpark Drive, to Greensboro Drive, to access Spring Hill Road. Southbound Spring Hill Road traffic wishing to access Route 7 will use the reverse of that route.

This work is expected to last through the overnight hours though mid-May. Closures will not be used if work is completed before that time.
