McLean Republican Leads the State in Political Contributions

Barbara Comstock tops the list of money raised in September

Incumbent Del. Barbara Comstock was the top fundraiser among all state candidates for September bringing in nearly $300,000 in political contributions, according to the latest campaign finance reports.

Her total even surpassed that of William Howell, the powerful Republican Speaker of the House of Delegates whose fund-raising totalled nearly $200,000. Comstock is running for her second term to represent the 34th District which included McLean.

Comstock's Democratic opponent  attorney Pam Danner raised about $82,000. All the numbers are from the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonprofit, nonaligned organization.

Republicans are ahead of Democrats in fundraising this election year both in McLean and in Virginia.

In the 31st Senate race where Democrat Barbara Favola faces Republican and McLean resident Caren Merrick: Merrick raised $168,000 and Favola $102,000 for September.

Merrick, a businesswoman running for the first time, was the eighth biggest fundraiser in the state. Favola, a long-time member of the Arlington County Board, was 20th.

The September contributions for candidates running for county supervisor and school board are not yet available.
