Moran: Government Shutdown Will Further Erode Confidence in Congress

House Republicans on Saturday demanded a one-year delay of Obamacare implementation and the repeal of a medical device tax, a hard line that all but assures the federal government will shut down on Tuesday.

If the government shuts down, more than 800,000 federal workers will not be at work and millions more could be working without a paycheck, according to the New York Times.

The federal government shut down twice in the 1990s, which the Office of Management and Budget estimates cost taxpayers $1.4 billion combined, or $2 billion when adjusted for inflation, according to U.S. Rep. Jim Moran's office.

“House Republicans have announced their intentions to move forward with a plan they know will shut down the government. The Republican majority has campaigned time and again on the premise that government doesn’t work and these theatrics only serve to fulfill that pledge,” Moran said in a statement.

“This maneuver will leave nearly a million federal employees without a paycheck in two weeks, jeopardizing our economic recovery and further eroding confidence in this institution.”

Moran represents much of Northern Virginia. His district includes about half of McLean.

White House spokesman Jay Carney in a statement Saturday called the House Republicans' action "reckless and irresponsible."
