McLean neighbor Newt Gingrich loses big in Florida primary

Presidential candidate and McLean neighbor Newt Gingrich took a beating in  Tuesday's Florida primary. He lost to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney by 15 percentage points.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum who lives in Great Falls came in a distant third.

1. This was a winner take all  primary with 50 delegates at stake. The New York Times: The voting so far has allocated only 5 percent of the delegates needed to claim the nomination. It takes 1,144 delegates to win the Republican nomination.

2. Gingrich's drubbing comes ten days after his double-digit win in the South Carolina primary.

3. Only Republicans could vote in the primary in what is now the 4th largest state in the U.S.

4. Politico reported that: With supporters waving signs that read, “46 States to Go,” Gingrich vowed: “We are going to contest every place and we are going to win and we will be in Tampa as the nominee in August.”

5. Romney and Gingrich split Florida, according to a neat map by the Los Angeles Times. Gingrich took Northern Florida and the Panhandle. This is the most conservative part of the state and the part most like the South.

Romney took the middle part of the state called the I-4 corridtor. He also took the southern part of Florida which is more diverse than the rest of the state.

Next stop Feb. 4. Nevada.
