The Senate race between these two former Virginia governors has become one of the most-watched Senate races of the 2012 election year.

"The fundraising numbers showcase that both of these campaigns are ultra-competitive with no distinct advantage for anyone at this point," said Mark Rozell, Professor of Public Policy at George Mason University, who studies Virginia politics.

"In the Senate and the presidential, each major party nominee will raise and spend more than enough money to be competitive throughout the march to November.  As the campaigns heat up further, look for these numbers to grow dramatically, along with unprecedented amounts of outside money pouring into the state," he said.

McLean's two zip codes lead all Virginia zip codes as the most generous in contributing to the presidential campaigns. The Senate race does not have a breakdown by zip code.

Sixteen percent of Romney's $4.5 million was donated by McLean residents. Eleven percent of the president's $4.2 million was donated by McLean residents.

"It shouldn’t be surprising that McLean is home to the most generous campaign contributors in the state of Virginia," Geoff Skelley, a political analyst at the University of Virginia Center for Politics has said. "The 22101 and 22102 ZIP codes are just about the richest in the state and are among the wealthiest in the country.”

McLean's median household income is nearly $165,000, according to the U.S. Census. Great Falls is the only jurisdiction that has a higher median household income with $189,000. The median household income for Fairfax County is $105,000.

McLean is also the address of major Republican and Democratic fundraisers, such as Fred Malek, Bobbie Kilberg for the Republicans and Terry McAuliffe for the Democrats.
