Street Closing Near Tysons Mall Tonight

Crane Building Subway Needs to Cross The Street

Tysons Boulevard, the street that starts at the front of Tysons Corner Mall at the intersection of Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) and runs to Galleria Drive, willl close overnight tonight.  In addition, the turn lanes from Route 123 also will be closed. The closings start at 8 p.m.

This road closure is required so that the Silver Line subway construction crews can move a 750-ton crane across the road.

Traffic will be detoured to avoid Tysons Boulevard. Drivers using southbound Route 123 will be detoured by staying on Route 123, then turning right on International Drive and an immediate right on to Galleria Drive.  Northbound Route 123 traffic should turn left on to International and also use Galleria Drive to access Tysons Boulevard.

The road closure is scheduled as follows:

8 p.m.  The two turn lanes from southbound Route 123 to westbound Tysons Boulevard, along with the left turn lane from northbound Route 123 will close. Crews will begin assembling crane mats across the road, which provide a foundation for the crane to cross without damaging the road.

9 p.m. For safety, a truck-mounted attenuator will park at the far left turn lane of eastbound Tysons Boulevard to northbound Route 123.

10 p.m.  All turn lanes from Galleria Drive to eastbound Tysons Boulevard, and all thru traffic to eastbound Tysons Boulevard will close so crews can complete the crane mat installation.

12 midnight to 2 a.m. Friday morning Crane will cross Tysons Boulevard into the work zone near the future Tysons Central 123 Station, which will be located at the Route 123 entrance to the mall.

2 a.m. to 5 a.m. Crews will remove crane mats along Tysons Boulevard and reopen all lanes to traffic.

In case of inclement weather Thursday night, this activity will be rescheduled for Monday night, April 25.
