Tonight: Beltway Lane Closings

Subway Construction of course

  • Major Lane Closings of the Capital Beltway. Two or three lanes of northbound I-495  (the Capital Beltway) will close overnights from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday-Friday. Crews will then close a third lane Tuesday-Thursday, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday, June 10, from 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. The closings are because overhead is construction of the aerial bridges that will carry the new Silver Line subway tracks over the Capital Beltway (I-495) at Route 123.
  • Expect major delays.
  • All ramps to and from Route 123 will remain open, except for the ramp from southbound Route 123 to southbound I-495, which will be closed in the overnight hours from Thursday, June 9 to Tuesday, June 14. During this ramp closure, traffic will be detoured by continuing on southbound Route 123, right on International Drive, right on Galleria Drive, right on Tysons Boulevard, then a brief left and immediate entrance to I-495.
  •  These closings also are scheduled to take place as needed throughout the year, until the aerial bridge is complete. Drivers should expect significant delays each night. Crews are using a large horizontal crane (also known as a truss) to build the bridges over I-495. Traffic cannot travel under active bridge construction for safety reasons.
  •  Police will be onsite. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution, and pay attention to signage. All work is weather-dependent and subject to change.
  • Closings of both the Dulles Toll and Access Roads. For two nights next week, closures on both the Dulles Toll Road and the Dulles  Highway are scheduled. The westbound lane cloisngs (see first time)  will be combined with a closing and detour of the eastbound Dulles Toll Road, also near Route 7.
  • 8 p.m. - The three left lanes of the eastbound Toll Road will close near Route 7.
10 p.m. - Eastbound toll road traffic will be switched on to the eastbound Access Road. This closure will occur overnights Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11, and as needed through the end of July.
  • Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) east to I-495: Each night, Monday-Saturday  starting at 9:30 p.m., one lane will close on the Toll Road at I-495 progressing to a full eastbound closure after 11 p.m. Motorists will be directed to I-495 south, to Exit 46B, Route 123 north, follow the signs to turn left onto I-495 north. All exit ramp lanes will reopen on weekdays by 5 a.m., on Saturday by 7 a.m. and on Sunday by 9 a.m. This closure allows crews to install steel bridge beams for the High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes in the center of the Beltway.
  • I-66 east at I-495: Each night, Tuesday- Saturday, starting at 9:30 p.m. one lane will close on I-66 east at I-495, progressing to a full I-66 east closure after 11 p.m. Motorists will be detoured to I-495 south to Exit 52B, Little River Turnpike east (Route 236), follow signage to I-495 north, back to Exit 49B, I-66 east. All lanes will reopen weekdays by 5 a.m. and by 7 a.m. on Saturday.  This closure allows crews to complete bridge demolition for the HOT lanes.
