Traffic Alert: Overnite Nightmare in McLean, Tyson's This Week

Fasten Your Seat Belts, It's Going to be a Bumpy Week

Here's this week's list of traffic traumas occasioned by the simultaneous construction of the rail line to Dulles and the HOT Lanes through McLean and Tysons Corner. Pack the patience.

I-495 south from Lewinsville Rd. overpass - Three lanes closed Tuesday - Saturday nights for demolition of the old Lewinsville Bridge. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.

Overnight Road, Ramp Closures of Route 123 at the Dulles Connector Road Jan. 3-7
 
Various closures at the intersection of southbound Route 123 and the Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) will be closed next week. Crews will be installing acoustical barriers on the bridge flyover, and thru traffic cannot travel underneath for safety reasons.
 
Tuesday, Jan. 3 and Wednesday, Jan. 4
Two right lanes of southbound Route 123 closed between Route 267 and Anderson Road.
Ramp from eastbound Route 267 to southbound Route 123: Traffic will be detoured by exiting on to northbound Route 123, turning right on Great Falls Street, right on [Old] Chain Bridge Road, right on Anderson Road to access southbound Route 123.

Thursday, Jan. 5 and Friday, Jan. 6
Southbound Route 123 closed between Great Falls Street and Anderson Road: Traffic will be detoured by turning left on Great Falls Street, right on [Old] Chain Bridge Road, right on Anderson Road.

Friday, Jan. 6 and Saturday, Jan. 7
Northbound Route 123 will be closed from Anderson Road to Great Falls Street: Northbound traffic will be detoured by turning right on Anderson Road, left on [Old] Chain Bridge Road, left on Great Falls Street. Ramp from eastbound Route 267 to northbound Route 123. Traffic will be detoured by using the southbound exit, going straight on Anderson Road, left on [Old] Chain Bridge Road, left on Great Falls Street.

Bridge Construction in Median of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) Will Continue to Close Spring Hill Road, Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road Intersections; Multiple Overnight Closures and Detours Required
 
Bridge construction continues in the median of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) over both the Spring Hill Road and Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road intersections. That means the middle of either or both intersections will beclosed between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 through Friday, Jan. 6.
 
When Spring Hill Road Intersection ONLY Is Closed
 
Thru traffic along both directions of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) still will be allowed, but for safety reasons, thru traffic on Spring Hill Road will not be allowed, and will be detoured by using Route 7 as follows:
Southbound Spring Hill Road thru traffic and motorists wanting to turn left on to eastbound Leesburg Pike will need to turn right on to westbound Leesburg Pike, then U-turn at Tyco Road/Westwood Center Drive, and continue on eastbound Leesburg Pike toward Spring Hill Road.
Northbound Spring Hill Road thru traffic and motorists wanting to turn left on to westbound Leesburg Pike will need to turn right on to eastbound Leesburg Pike, U-turn at Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road, and continue on westbound Route 7 to access Spring Hill Road.

When BOTH the Spring Hill Road and Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road Intersections Are Closed
Southbound Spring Hill Road and Westpark Drive thru traffic and motorists wanting to turn left on to eastbound Leesburg Pike will need to turn right on to westbound Leesburg Pike, then U-turn at Tyco Road/Westwood Center Drive, and continue on eastbound Leesburg Pike toward Spring Hill Road.
Northbound Spring Hill Road and Gosnell Road thru traffic and motorists wanting to turn left on to westbound Leesburg Pike will need to turn right on to eastbound Leesburg Pike, left on International Drive to access Westpark Drive.
Drivers should expect approximately 10- to 15- minute travel delays if traveling through this area during these closures, which are expected to last through the end of the year.
 
Specific closure information will be released daily until work is complete.
 
Right Lane of Southbound Route 123, Ramp to Northbound I-495 to Close Overnight
 
Southbound Route 123 in Tysons Corner will be closed between Capital One Drive and the east side of I-495 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 to Friday, Jan. 6 for overhead bridge construction.
 
In addition, the on-ramp from southbound Route 123 to northbound I-495 also will be closed on those nights from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. To access I-495 North, traffic will be detoured to continue on southbound Route 123, right on International Drive, right on Galleria Drive, right on Tysons Boulevard, then left on to northbound Route 123 to the second exit on to northbound I-495.

Eastbound Tysons Boulevard to Close Tuesday through Friday Nights

 The eastbound lanes of Tysons Boulevard will be closed between Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) and Galleria Drive Tuesday through Friday nights, Jan. 3-6, for overhead bridge, pier and station work near the future Tysons Central 123 station.
 
This also will require the closures of the turn lanes on to eastbound Tysons Boulevard from northbound Chain Bridge Road (Route 123), and northbound and southbound Galleria Drive. Generally, these lane closures will begin to be implemented at 9:30 p.m. each night, and will be lifted between 5 a.m. each following morning.
 
Detours around this closure will be in place. Please use extreme caution, pay attention to signage, and obey police direction if traveling around this intersection.
 
Facility Delivery to Fisher Avenue Thursday Jan. 5; Flaggers on Site for Safety
 
On or about Thursday, Jan. 5, contractors for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project will deliver a 12-by-12- foot prefabricated communications room facility to the construction site along Fisher Avenue in the Brilyn Park subdivision of Falls Church.
 
Thru traffic on Fisher Avenue will be reduced to one lane during the times when the communications room is delivered and set into place. Flaggers will be on site to direct thru traffic and ensure residents' safety between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. that day.
 
The communications room will arrive on a large flatbed via Great Falls Street, then on to Fisher Avenue. The flatbed will exit the neighborhood by driving down Fisher Avenue to Westmoreland Street because there is no place to turn around at the work site.

There's more for your driving displeasure: Closures listed below occur between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m

Lewinsville Rd. east or west from Timberly Ln. Scotts Run Rd. - Road closed Tuesday - Thursday nights for sidewalk demolition. Traffic will be directed by flagger.

Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 267) west at I-495 - Road closed Tuesday and Wednesday nights for bridge overhang removal. Traffic will be directed to take I-495 north to Exit 44, Georgetown Pike (Route 193),  stay to the left, follow signs to I-495 south to Exit 45A, Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 267) west.

Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 267) east at main toll plaza - Road closed Tuesday - Thursday nights for overhang work. Traffic will be directed to use the Dulles Airport Access Highway. Motorists will not be tolled.

Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 267) east to I-495 north - Ramp closed Tuesday and Wednesday nights for bridge work. Traffic will be directed to continue east to Exit 19A, Dolley Madison Blvd. (Route 123) south and follow signs to I-495 north.

I-495 north to Exit 45A, Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 627) west - Ramp closed Tuesday and Wednesday nights for overhang removal. Traffic will be directed to continue north to Exit 44, Georgetown Pike (Route 193) west, stay to the left, follow signs to I-495 south and then signs to Exit 45A, Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 267) west. 

Leesburg Pike (Route 7) east and west at Lisle Ave. - Multiple lanes closed Thursday night for sign installation. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.

I-495 south at Exit 49, I-66 - Road closed Tuesday - Saturday nights for bridge demolition. Traffic will be directed to take Exit 49A, I-66 west, then take Exit 62, Nutley St. south, stay to the right, follow signs to I-66 east and then signs to I-495 south.

I-495 south from Exit 49, I-66 to Lee Hwy. (Route 29) overpass - Three lanes closed Tuesday - Saturday nights for overhang and bridge work.
