Tysons Corner Subway Costs Explored in The Washington Post

The Washington Post published a story Sunday explaining the current status of the costs of building the new Silver Line from Falls Church to Reston. We want to commend the story to the neighbors who may have missed it.

The Metrorail extension through Tysons Corner has burned through more than 70 percent of its contingency fund but the major costs are paid for, according to the story.

The project, the first phase of Metrorail’s extension to Dulles International Airport and Loudoun County, began with $312.3 million allotted for unforeseen expenses two years ago. As of June, that fund had dwindled to $89.7 million, The Post reported.

Biggest costs: Moving utility lines.

That shrinkage feeds doubts about whether managers will be able to finish the project on time and on budget, the story reported.But Metro officials said the project that will finaly bring the subway to Tysons Corner is on time and on budget. The line is scheduled to open in 2013.
