Bridge Construction in Median of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) Will Close Spring Hill Road, Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road Intersections through End of Year; Multiple Overnight Closures and Detours Required

The large yellow-and-blue truss that has been constructing the aerial guideway in the median of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) in Tysons Corner is approaching the Spring Hill Road intersection. Beginning this week overnight closures will be required as the bridge is built over the intersection.

This requires the middle of the intersection to be closed between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Thru traffic along both directions of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) still will be allowed, but for safety reasons, thru traffic on Spring Hill Road will not be allowed, and will be detoured by using Route 7 as follows:

  • Southbound Spring Hill Road through traffic and motorists wanting to turn left on to eastbound Leesburg Pike will need to turn right on to westbound Leesburg Pike, then U-turn at Tyco Road/Westwood Center Drive, and continue on eastbound Leesburg Pike toward Spring Hill Road.
  • Northbound Spring Hill Road through traffic and motorists wanting to turn left on to westbound Leesburg Pike will need to turn right on to eastbound Leesburg Pike, U-turn at Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road, and continue on westbound Route 7 to access Spring Hill Road.

There will be some nights over the next month when bridge crews will close both the Spring Hill Road and Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road intersections. On those nights, thru traffic will be directed as follows:

  • Southbound Spring Hill Road and Westpark Drive through traffic and motorists wanting to turn left on to eastbound Leesburg Pike will need to turn right on to westbound Leesburg Pike, then U-turn at Tyco Road/Westwood Center Drive, and continue on eastbound Leesburg Pike toward Spring Hill Road.
  • Northbound Spring Hill Road and Gosnell Road through traffic and motorists wanting to turn left on to westbound Leesburg Pike will need to turn right on to eastbound Leesburg Pike, then U-turn at International Drive on to westbound Route 7.

Drivers should expect approximately 10- to 15-minute travel delays if traveling through this area during these closures, which are expected to last through the end of the year.

The truss will continue to move west toward the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267). Once the Spring Hill Road crossing is complete, the next intersection to be crossed will be Tyco Road/Westwood Center Drive, expected in early 2012.

The bridge construction over Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road also is expected to complete in early 2012. It is being constructed using ground-based cranes instead of the truss because of the intersection's width.

Specific closure information will be released daily until work is complete.

Police will be onsite during all closures. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution, and pay attention to signage. All work is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Long-term Right Lane Closure on Southbound Route 123 to Be Implemented Next Week

Beginning on or about Dec. 12, the right lane of southbound Route 123 (Dolley Madison Boulevard) will close from Old Meadow Road to Colshire Drive. This lane will remain closed through 2012, as Dulles Metro crews construct the pavilion on the south side of Route 123 and the pedestrian bridge connecting it to the future Tysons East Station.

The bus stop will remain in its current location, and a temporary walkway will be constructed around the work zone to allow thru pedestrian traffic.
