VDOT to Tell Drivers How Long They'll be Stuck on I-66

A way to ease congestion?

Beginning Aug. 22, drivers will see travel times displayed on the Interstate 66 electronic message signs between the Capital Beltway and Gainesville.

That way you will know how long you will stuck on I-66.

Or as the Virginia Department of Transportation said, by providing current, accurate travel times to key destinations, drivers can make a more informed decision to consider an alternate route.

Can you find out about backups before you commit to I-66? No. It will be awhile before the put the information on the Web, according to the governor's press office.

When will they put up time signs for the part of I-66 that does into the District? We've asked the governor's office. When we get an answer, we'll share.

Gov. Bob McDonnell's office said yesterday this is a test to address congestion on the I-66 corridor. If VDOT’s two-month pilot project is successful, the agency will be expanded to provide travel times to key destinations along other northern Virginia interstates and ultimately to highways throughout the Old Dominion.

Starting Aug. 22, drivers will see travel times posted at three locations:
·         I-66 East, just east of Route 28, to display the travel time to I-495
·         I-66 West, just west of Route 50, to display the travel time to Gainesville
·         I-66 West, just west of Route 7100, to display the travel time to Gainesville

Travel times will be displayed weekdays from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Drivers can learn more about the pilot project and provide feedback on the display times here.
